Training on Quality Evaluation of Cotton

In India, cotton quality evaluation is accomplished largely by hand and eye methods- during purchasing of seed cotton from farmers by traders and ginning factory owners, which are known to suffer from limitations of inconsistency, subjectivity and inaccuracy. After globalization of market economy, cotton community all over the world has become quality conscious. Hence, there is need for well-trained personnel, the world over to evaluate cotton and cotton textiles on scientific and objective basis. ICAR-CIRCOT, with its appropriate infrastructure for training, conducts tailor-made training courses to impart adequate theoretical and practical knowledge for skill improvement in evaluation of cotton fibres, yarn and fabrics.

Objectives

  • Skill development on cotton grading, quality evaluation & marketing to cater the needs of indian cotton sector
  • Provide hands on experience on visual grading, and instrumental methods
  • Know how on effect of ginning & spinning on fibre and yarn quality and economics of cotton processing

  • Background information on the development of different varieties, cotton production & fibre growth
  • Contaminations and trash in cotton and its estimation
  • Cotton ginning and various methods of ginning, visual grading of cotton
  • Management practices for cotton harvesting & storage
  • Fibre quality evaluation: Theoretical background, sampling for testing, logic and methods, measurement of length, fineness, maturity, strength, trash content, fibre quality index etc
  • High Volume Instrument (HVI) and Advanced Fibre Information System (AFIS) evaluation for fibre quality
  • Spinning behavior of Indian cotton and yarn characteristics.
  • Techno-entrepreneurial activities & Agri-Business Incubation
  • Visit to Cotton Association of India, commercial grading of cotton and trade practices
