ICAR-CIRCOT Scientists interacted with the Officials of APMC, Pune for technology adoption

Scientists from ICAR-CIRCOT, Dr. A.S.M. Raja, Dr. N. Vigneshwaran and Dr. Manoj Kumar visited the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), Pune on November 13, 2017 to discuss about the possibility for adoption of various technologies developed at the Institute. This meeting was coordinated by Dr. K. V. Prasad, Director of ICAR-Directorate of Floricultural Research, Pune. APMC Pune is the second largest market yard in India with an annual turnover of Rs. 125 crores with a primary mandate to support farmers for auctioning their agricultural produce to the licensed traders. The important component of APMC is the flower market yard wherein the flowers from the nearby localities are auctioned for both domestic and international markets. After the completion of trade, the unsold flowers in huge volumes are dumped by the farmers as they can’t afford to store it or transport back to their area. In this backdrop, the Chairman of APMC, Mr. Dilip Shankar Khaire along with the Secretary, Dr. P. L. Khandagale arranged a meeting to discuss about the possibility of adoption of technologies from ICAR-CIRCOT and ICAR-DFR to add value to the biomass being collected in the APMC, Pune. Various stakeholders including licensed traders and farmers attended this meeting. The technologies for extraction of pigments / dyes & essential oils from the discarded flowers and vermicompost production from the leafy and other biomasses were discussed in the meeting. The Chairman Mr. Khaire assured to incorporate the technologies for value addition in their upcoming project on New APMC market yard, Pune from the very beginning of its inception that is scheduled for operation within a year.
Further, Scientists from both ICAR-CIRCOT and ICAR-DFR discussed about the possibility of using nano-finished cotton textile materials for packing and transportation of flowers to avoid the fungal (Botrytis sp.) attack, using biodegradable composite materials as an alternative for plastic based pots & planters and development of compostable / biodegradable grow bags for nursery plants. Accordingly, the action points were chalked out for faster implementation for the benefit of diversified stakeholders.
