Shri. Parshottam Rupala, Hon’ble Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Panchayati Raj, Govt of India visited ICAR-CIRCOT, Mumbai on 24th October 2016. Hon’ble Minister visited various research laboratories, nanocellulose pilot plant and exhibition cum visitors’ room of the Institute. Dr. P.G. Patil, Director welcomed the Hon’ble Minister and briefed about the research activities and achievements of the Institute.
Hon’ble Minister Shri. Parshottam Rupala addressed all the staff members and appreciated the work done by the Scientists in the field of post-harvest processing of cotton and by-products’ utilization / value addition. Also, he lauded the establishment of India’s first Nanocellulose Pilot Plant facility at CIRCOT, Mumbai and emphasized the need to exploit its potential through product development.
Hon’ble Minister stressed the importance of Technology Transfer from Lab to Land for the benefit of farmers and other stakeholders. He also stressed upon the need to promote the use of cottonseed oil as an edible oil in lieu of the current dependence on imported edible oil. As CIRCOT is the only Institute in India working in the areas of utilization of cotton, its by-products and biomass, Hon’ble Minister felt the need for modernization of infrastructure and strengthening of manpower.
Shri. Suresh Kotak, Chairman of Indian Society for Cotton Improvement and Chairman, Kotak Foundation briefed the importance of research & development to promote cotton based textiles to tackle the threat posed by man-made fibres.
