ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology, Mumbai observed the Nation-wide campaign on tree plantation & awareness under the theme ‘हर मेड़ पर पेड़’ (Tree on Every Weir) on ICAR Foundation Day on Friday i.e. 16th July, 2021.This was the 4th program at the institute in the DARE-ICAR Campaign for India@75 under *भारत का अमृत महोत्सव*.
On the previous day itself i.e. on the eve of ICAR Foundation day, tree plantation drive was conducted at the Ginning Training Centre of the Institute at Nagpur. On 16th July, 2021, The Director, HODs and staff members of the institute attended the virtual tree plantation ceremony by the DG, ICAR and other senior officers of the ICAR. They also participated in the 93rd ICAR Foundation Day and Awards Ceremony program through Webex and live-streaming.
In the afternoon at 3.30 p.m., a program to create awareness about the importance of tree plantation was organised at the Institute in physical as well as virtual mode. It started with the ICAR song. Dr. Sujata Saxena, Director (Acting) welcomed the participants which included scientists, academicians and research students from fellow organisations, farmers and other stake holders, media persons and staff members from Headquarters, GTC and quality Evaluation Units located in various states and their family members and congratulated them on the occasion of the 93rd Foundation Day of ICAR. She said that ICAR during its long existence has made significant contributions and has ensured food security of the nation. From being an importer of food grains and other items including cotton at the time of independence, we have now become a net exporter. She said that trees play a vital role in our life and stressed that the theme of today’s celebration ‘हर मेड़ पर पेड़’ (Tree on Every Weir) is the need of the hour. Trees give us oxygen, store carbon, stabilise the soil and give food and shelter to the wildlife which becomes very significant in the context of the global warming being observed today due to an increase in carbon-dioxide levels and the resultant climate change. She said that with active contributions from research institutes and Agricultural Universities, it should be possible to achieve the target of planting 10 million trees under this campaign. On this occasion, Dr. Manoj Kumar Puniya, Scientist, at the institute delivered a presentation on ‘Benefits of growing trees and their management practices’. The presentation covered vital aspects of tree growing with know-how of management practices. This interactive presentation got good accolades from the audience. Around 120 people participated in this program in online as well as offline mode which was also streamed live on YouTube for larger public accessibility. This event was also reported in Hindi newspaper ‘Saamana’ on 18th July 2021.
