An International webinar on “Resilience of Cotton Sector amidst global pandemic” was organized to celebrate the World Cotton Day by ICAR-CIRCOT, Mumbai in collaboration with Indian Society for Cotton Improvement (ISCI) on 7th October 2020.
Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary DARE and DG, ICAR was the Chief Guest on the occasion. In his address he expressed that COVID pandemic is a matter of concern, but the focus should be to redesign and rediscover the major cotton research programmes to evolve a comprehensive strategy to address the issues faced by the cotton sector. He stressed that we should capitalize on presence of like-minded international organizations and work in collaboration with them to get fruitful results.
Earlier Dr. K. Alagusundaram, DDG (Agricultural Engineering), Chairman of the event has stressed the need to move forward with regard to mechanization of cotton farming and development of value chain at farm level for the benefit of the farming community. Dr. T. R. Sharma, DDG (Crop Science) in his address as the guest of honour has shared his vision on the cotton production programmes in the light of the pandemic.
The distinguished speakers who shared their perspective on the “Resilience of the Cotton Sector Amidst Global Pandemic” in their respective domains are Dr. C. D. Mayee, President, South Asia Biotechnology Centre; Dr. K. R. Kranti, Head, Technical Information Section, ICAC, Washington, Mr. Kris Terauds, Development Economist, UNCTAD, Geneva, Dr.P.G.Patil, Director, Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology. Shri Suresh Kotak, President of Indian Society for Cotton Improvement welcomed the gathering
The meeting was also graced by the presence of ADG’s (Engineering and Crop Science), representatives from ICAC, UNCTAD; Stakeholders involved in Cotton processing and trade, researchers, academia and students.
